DASHCAM | Found footage horror, comedy | 2021 | Rob Savage | I love this movie but it's not for everyone; very divisive among the found footage community lol. The main character is a loud, crass, mean, dumb, casually racist, constantly offensive Trump supporter Twitch streamer (a heavily fictionalized version of the actor herself, comedian Annie Hardy) breaking covid lockdown protocols to go bother her friend, and they fucking stumble into a horror movie. I think it's fantastic; found footage horror has a serious problem with not having any characters, everybody is just a cardboard cutout who becomes a screaming cardboard cutout by the end; Annie is so awful and grating and that makes it really fun to watch her confront horrors beyond her imagination, while being consistently herself throughout the whole movie. |

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes | Science fiction, action | 2014 | Matt Reeves
Daylight | Disaster | 1996 | Rob Cohen
The Day of Destruction | Horror | 2020 | Toshiaki Toyoda | A fucking batshit buck wild experimental movie metaphorically depicting the decay of Japan's national identity and historic heritage in the modern world, coincidentally released during the covid-19 pandemic. I'm sure it will resonate more deeply with somebody of Japanese descent or who's more familiar with the Japanese collectivist sensibilities, but I was still blown away by the evident layers of symbolism on display; it's a movie where you can tell the director is DYING to get his message out, literally screaming at his country, his people, to listen to what he's trying to say. |
Day of Disappearance | Horror | 2022 | Ian Grant | This one is a little weird because it appears to be a guy's YouTube horror series cut together into a film? It's still interesting though, I'm always impressed when I see a horror creator doing weird shit to themselves for the sake of their YouTube videos. |

Digimon: The Movie | Science fiction, animation | 2000 | Mamoru Hosoda, Shigeyasu Yamauchi
The Discovery | Science fiction, drama | 2017 | Charlie McDowell | A movie with an amazing premise (A scientist emperically proves that there is life after death, but becomes a pariah when people around the world start to kill themselves to get to the next life on their own terms) bogged down by an incredibly boring, small-scale plot that really doesn't explore the implications of such a setup. |

Dreamcatcher | Science fiction, horror | 2003 | Lawrence Kasdan | I'm already not a big Stephen King fan but holy shit this movie is terrible. |
Dream Scenario | Comedy, drama | 2024 | Kristoffer Borgli | I was really hoping for more with this movie. It takes heavy inspiration from the "Have you seen this man?" urban legend - with Nicolas Cage appearing in people's dreams for unknown reasons - so I was expecting more of a horror movie than what I actually got. It's an extremely well-made movie, and there were some moments that did scare me, but overall I wish it had gone deeper into the horror or tragedy of the situation. |
